Why an Organic Hamper?

For me it was my first organic carrot. The best way I could think of describing the flavour was 'this is how it is supposed to taste'. Everyone who eats organic food regularly, has a story like this. But flavour is not the only reason to choose organic, it is better for you, it is better for animal welfare and it is better for the environment.

Better For You

Organic foods are grown without chemicals. Instead farmers use natural methods to prevent pests and to fertilise the land. Organic soil is nourished with nutrients, which are passed on to the plants and then on to you. It is thought that this is the reason that organic food is so full of vitamins and minerals.

Conventional farmers often enlist the help of over 400 pesticides in the rearing of their crops. High levels of these pesticides have been found in the foods that we regularly consume.

Once the organic crop leaves the farm it stays pure. Organic food contains, no GMO's, no hydrogenated fat and no nasty additives such as monosodium glutamate.

Better For Animal Welfare

Animal welfare is extremely important in organic farming.

Organically reared animals must have access to the outdoors. They are not kept in cramped and confined spaces and because of this the animals are much healthier.

The routine use of antibiotics is banned as is the use of growth promoting drugs or GM food based feeds.

Better For The Environment

Organic farming works hand in hand with nature. Organic farming does not make use of artificial fertilisers, which pollute our waters. Instead, organic farmers plant crops, which naturally nourish the soil with nitrogen and use crop rotation and composted manure to fertilise their land.

Organic farms support the natural world by having more trees and hedges on their land. This provides the perfect habitat for spiders, beetles and birds, which are nature's own pest controllers. It has been found that organic farms can have 44% more birds and more than five times as many wild plants in their fields.

So be good to yourselves and the world around you and choose organic.
